WE Manifes-To
On the behalf of WE:
written by Filiz Cicek
in collaboration with Le Anh Nguyen-Long
WE is made up of women artists and volunteers.WE believes that Art is one of the most powerful forms of expression. Therefore:
WE embraces “female values and experiences as a legitimate basis for the creation of art" (Broude & Garrard) in order to better challenge hegemony and patriarchy.
WE welcomes diverse aesthetic ideologies ranging from traditional feminine “crafts” to high art.
WE serves as a venue for artists and performers in a nontraditional community-based space.
WE gathers annually to create and share art with the local community and to support Middle Way House and the Rise to help empower their members.
WE records women’s experiences and achievements in written, temporary and oral traditions.
WE strives for diversity to reflect the local artists of Bloomington, and welcomes national, and international artist to participate.
WE departs from the traditional patriarchic hegemonic model for the selection of art, which privileges an individual expert over the collective process of art making and sharing.
WE welcomes a critical view, yet it is not fundamental to its purpose. Instead WE places value on the experience and the feedback of its participants.
WE is supported by local business institutions, residents.
WE will exercise positive discrimination until it is no longer needed.
